The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan (SCEJ) announced the Sapporo Declaration titled "Declaration on the United Nations SDGs at Sapporo 2019 - Chemical Engineering for Human Well-Being -" at APCChE2019 in September 2019. With the SDGs as a shared vision, it calls for a transition from efficiency to sufficiency, that is, from a society that pursues efficiency to a society in which people feel fulfilled. We have been discussing to spread this declaration inside and outside the society and to put it into practice.
The chemical industry have to change itself to contribute to the sustainable society, and among various issues, carbon-neutral is an urgent one. If we focus only on efficiency, the answer may be to move factories overseas where renewable energy is abundant.
In this symposium, we will discuss the ideal chemical factories of the future, which sustain themselves in harmony with the local community and provide a variety of human resources with opportunities and job satisfaction, with a sufficiency perspective.Following the lectures, participants will be divided into groups for participatory workshops with subthemes. This symposium is open to the public and will be made interactive.
